bearded dragon eggs

Question
hi we have two bearded dragons that have mated and the female has layed her clutch inside a separate tank. The only problem is the second vivarium is at 21 degrees Celsius and I will have to wait over 24 hours for an incubator or any alternative heating to arrive. Is there anything i can do in the meantime to keep the eggs alive and the dragons warm? Thanks

Answer
Hi Martin,

If you have not already done so, I would first recommend moving the eggs out of the laying tank and into a small incubation container with damp vermiculite or perlite. That will keep them from drying out which is another hazard. Once they are in the smaller container with a lightly ventilated lid (most people use plastic food storage type containers) then even a small wattage bulb placed over them will suffice until the incubator arrives. You don't need to have them at the ideal temperature right away and even briefly overheating them is far more likely to kill them then a day or two at lower temperatures.
Remember that a temperature of 26 - 29 C is really not very noticeable to your hand. If it feels "nice and warm" it is likely too hot for the eggs. You really need a dependable thermometer and you will want to test whatever heat source you are using with an empty container before risking your eggs.

I know several people that use the top of the fridge as an incubation spot with great success!
