Leopard Gecko not eating or drinking!!

Question
I purchased a leopard gecko from the pet store 10 days ago for my son. I initially started using Reptilite's calcium substrate sand maybe an inch deep. We got her Thursday evening the 29th of Jan. and the first time we saw her eat was Sunday the 1st. She ate about 6 crickets pretty quickly! I dusted the crickets in calcium prior to feeding her the medium sized crickets. Initially I did not know to take out the uneaten crickets so she had 2 in with her at all times over the next two days. I have never seen her crawl into her water bowl to drink. It is a glass bowl from the pet shop about an inch high. I initially read how great the calcium sand was, but then saw how controversial it was (on the internet) so I took it out of her 10 gallon aquarium for fear she was ingesting too much. I switched to paper towels on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I have tried to give her water from a dropper and have occasionally misted her with water. She is defacating about every other day?? There is both white and brown substance when she does, is that normal?? I think she may have shed Friday night into Saturday and did read that they may lose their appetite for a while when this occurs. I may totally be concerned for no reason but I think she has only eaten 2 crickets since last Sunday (only because I couldn't find them to take them out so I am hoping that she ate them and I didn't see her do it). Oh her temperature at one end is 75 to 80 during the day and the other end is I think around 90 - I say I think because I initially put in an adhesive thermometer towards the top of the cage where the hood is that one reads 95 but I put one in down towards the ground where she is and that one says 88. Her heat/light  sources are a 15 w zoo med blue light on the cool end and a 40 watt Sun Glo lamp on the warm end. The temp at the top was 88 but I just recently added a 40 watt reg light bulb on a direct light source through the screen lid and it now reads the aforementioned temps. Additionally there is a 10-20 gallon under the tank heater that is actually on the side towards the bottom because the substrate is light and the aquarium is on a dresser. Okay I think I have given all the details, I am hoping she is not impacted with the sand or something else but from what I read she should be eating several crickets a day, I just keep putting them in then taking them out about an hour later... Thank you for any and all advice!!

Answer
Hello Virginia,

First I am happy to hear that you changed out the calcium based sand.  Geckos are terrible about ingesting that stuff.  A long time ago, my husband & I lost one in that manner, impaction due to the sand & we did not catch it in time.  So it is a real concern, yes.
Yes, just put crickets in there & remove them for overnight so they don't accidentally bite & or stress her.
The round analogue type of thermometers don't measure the basking spots unfortunately.  They only measure the ambient temps, & the glass temperatures.  You will need to get a digital probe or a temp gun to measure the temps, spot on.
The recommended basking or hot end temps are 88-90, with the cooler side around 80.  On the hot side do you have the undertank heater with the basking light?
Do you have a moist cave/hide on top of the undertank heater as well?  That helps raise the humidity in that area to help with shedding.
Yes, when they are getting ready to shed, their appetite will normally decrease for a few days, then, they usually do eat their shed so I would say their appetite decreases for around a week or so before increasing again.
Yes, the stool comprises of the white portion or the urates which is concentrated urine or urea in solid form, & then the waste material which is the brown portion.  Look closely for sand coming out in the stool.
If she will take oral fluids try doing so daily, if she is not drinking out of her water bowl.  If you feel she needs more food, you can get some chicken or turkey babyfood & see if she will eat some of that also.

Let me know how she is doing.
