I purchase a crested gecko from Petco about 10 days ago.  He
is currently 3 grams, so I know he is fairly young.  I know
that crested geckos are supposed to be very active,
especially at night.  I have done a lot of research on the
internet, and have learned that my gecko seems to be
unusually calm and almost lazy. I'm a night person, and
every time I check on him at night, he is almost in the same
spot in his tank.  I have caught him on the floor a couple
of times, but still nothing close to the activity level of
what I have heard of.  This is not my greatest concern.  I
started handling him after giving him a week to adjust to
his new home.  He scrambles away from my hands a little bit,
but once I get pick him up, he just sits on my hand.  He
does not really walk around or try to jump.  He even tends
to stay in place when I tilt my hand a little.  When I touch
his back legs to get him to move, he usually just wraps his
tail around my finger and backs up onto my other hand very
slowly.  I just have never seen him move very fast.  He will
jump from my hand to the plants in his tank.

Do I have an usually calm or lazy gecko, or is there
something wrong with him?  I can take him to the vet if it
is necessary, but I'm not familiar enough with the species
to know.  His eyes and nose are clear, and he has no stuck
shed.  Any advice you have is greatly appreciated.

Answer
I don't believe in calm or lazy explanations. Reptiles are too instinctual and always act for a logical reason, even if something is wrong.

What are the specific dimensions of this viv? It may not be vertical enough to allow him to feel secure and climb. Does he have climbing accessories?

Young reptiles often use holding still as their first defense, particularly if already being handled, and this does not mean he is calm. A still reptile can still be stressing to death.

I realize you may have been told no UVB is necessary, but I believe people who make such recommendations are fools. Even nocturnal reptiles receive UVB exposure in the wild. If they sleep on the ground or in tress, they are still getting it. If they sleep in caves or crevices, they still receive scatter from a tropical or sub-tropical sun. They can also receive UVB from bright moonlight. UVB is not absent in the wild, and only a fool will suggest to you that it is not necessary in captivity. I recommend at least a 5.0 fluorescent linear (not compact, not coil).

What specifically is "crested gecko diet". That is not enough information on what he is eating.

The fact that he is eating and defecating is encouraging. He may be getting ill, or he may be stressed from the move and the new habitat, or maybe something is wrong with the habitat.
