Russian Tortoise & Pinworms

Question
I recently was giving our Russian Tortoise his bath (every 3 days) and noticed what I belive to be pinworms in his water - he usually has his bowel movements in them.  I am going to take him to a vet but would like to get information prior to going to make sure the vet is good.  His appetite is great - eats his salad completely, still active and alert.  What treatment would be best?  What is the possibility of re-infection?  We bought him from a pet store and I am not sure if he was wild caught or captive born.  What types of problems do Pinworms cause?  Can pinworm eggs live in the bark?  Should I change the bark out twice after medication?  I love this tortoise and want him to stay safe and healthy for a long time. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Katie,

I don't know much about pin worms, but I'll tell you what I do know and think.  First of all, clean out his home thoroughly now, during, and after treatment.  You should also get yourself checked out since you've been exposed.  Pin worms are easy to spread to humans.  Eggs can survive anywhere for a period of time, so that does include bark and this is why you need to clean out his home a few times.
