Iguana eye problems

Question
Hi Thea,

I have a 5 year old green iguana that is nice and healthy and sheds very regularly. He has shed the skin from the top of his head about 2weeks ago.He still has a little skin to shed around his dulap and bottom jaw.The problem is that he keeps his right eye closed constantly. He has been doing this for 2 days now. There doesn't seem to be any swelling or infection but for some reason he wont open it.He done this before about 3months ago but he opened it again after 2 days.He has a bath twice a week and all ways seems content. When this happened 3 months ago on the night it started to happen i gave him a bath and washed his eye and the day after he opened it again and seemed to be fine. Its now into day 2 and im very worried.I will continue to bathe his eye but other than a trip to the vet i don't know what else to do.I supplement his food at every feed with a pinch of Sera-Reptimineral H-i have used this supplement for nearly 5 years and he seams fit and healthy with no aggressive tendonses.Have you heard of a problem like this before i cant explain it so any help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
James

Answer
Hi James, I think you are on the right track. With no pus, swelling or sign of injury I would also just continue with the flushing of the eye for another day or two, in fact if you can run the shower over him I would suggest that. My adult male often retains skin in the delicate folds around the eye after a shed and this is the easiest and safest way to remove it. Stubborn pieces can be gently brushed away with a well moistened cotton tipped swab.

The circumstances of this  occuring and disappearing really suggest that it is related to the shedding but I should mention that there have been cases of eye irritation caused by some of the coil type UVB bulbs, just FYI.
