QuestionFor the past couple of days I have been pulling some tiny parasite like bugs out of my male bearded dragon's ears he's been with me for 5 years couple of days a go I've seen him just sit there all uncomfortable look on him with his eyes closed. I looked at him to see what was wrong then I saw something in his ears moving I pulled out three at first in his right ear then I crushed them I thought they were mites being brown I went to get mite medicine for reptiles the next day then I saw more in his ear I pulled them out again then I looked closely they didn't look like mites they were brown with the center of the abdomen a darker color they had six legs they looked like louse but they were drinking my poor bearded dragon's blood because when I pooped them blood came out. They looked like this http://flushrush.com/insects-will-be-happy-to-suck-your-blood/ on the bottom of the page the one that says louse. How can louse be eating my dragon internet says they eat mammals and birds. Then again I work at a pet shop show I could have carried them home. But anyways they are not mites as mites are arachnids and eight legs these had six legs also I found a two whole groups cluster in two corners of his tank I took them out and kept them alive maybe I should bring them to a vet to find a way to dipose of them. How did I get them the first place? How do I get rid of them? Can they transfer disease? What can I do I have never heard of louse drinking reptile blood?
Thank you for your time.
Answer Hi Thomas,
I will admit that in all my time, I have not heard of reptile lice. I wonder where you are located and wonder if they could be some other kind of larvae. I seriously think you should be getting to a good reptile vet, this may be a bird louse, and I would have him treated definitively since it is now effecting his overall health. Go ASAP.
