Leo Gecko
Leo Gecko

Under His Tail
Under His Tail
I just recently bought a baby leopard gecko from the pet store last Tuesday. For a little info on his cage and setup: He is in a 10gal tank with an under tank heater and dome lights (red and white). The temp is usually 90 on the hot side and 75 on the cool side.He has two hides one on each side. A bowl of mealworms always inside the cage and a bowl with calcium and water. My leopard gecko is really thin and hasn't eaten a thing since I have had him. I will add a picture of him so you can see. Also I have notice some green poop im guessing under his tail, it is also red and looks irritated. I really don't want to just take him back for a different one at the pet store.

I have added two pictures. One taken a few days ago and one taken 5min ago. the one just recently shows under his tail. He was laying in that position when I looked at him on his own.

HELPPPPP

Answer
Hi Ashley,
He really does not look good at all...extremely skinny and the red vent area is not normal nor is the green poop as they do not eat anything that would cause that.
Are you using bottom heat on only 1/3 of the tank?  I know it is sometimes tough to get the temperatures right in a 10 gallon tank.  Be sure to measure the temperature on the floor of the warm side.
Very odd the position he was in.
Mealworms are not a good daily diet for leos, especially young ones.  The mealworms contain a large amount of hard outer body "shell".  this does not digest and can cause blockages.  Crickets are a much better choice for them to eat.  With mealworms, if you raise your own, you can feed the freshly shed ones which are the ones that are white/light tan in color.  They do not have the hard outer body when they are freshly shed.
I would try offering crickets and if he does not want to chase them, you can break the hind legs on the crickets which will stop them from jumping.  Also, maybe a few wax worms, but only a few and on occasion as they are very high in fat content and can cause fatty liver disease if fed too many.
Personally...if those two food items don't work, I would take him back to the store.  he really is very skinny and as I said, green poop and a red "butt" are not a good sign. I know it isn't easy to part with a pet, even after having them for only a few days but sometimes it is necessary when their health isn't what it should be.  Here is a link that tells you how to pick a healthy leopard gecko.
