Runny, bloody dropping in Mountain Horned Dragon

Question
We bought our MHD at the end of Oct., after a bad experience with a previous one (she would not eat or drink adn got very sick and died). I did completely clean out the tank, before introducing the new one. I feed red wigglers, i do have a tupperware dish bigger then him with water. I did have an air stone in it, but he seemed to not like it, would never go in, and if i put him in it he would immediately jump out. The water was warm, not hot not cold. I have a mister lizard, that i have teh dipping tube on and use it many times a day. he will drink some of the water running down his tree when on it. He started eating the worms right away, and his droppings appeared to be normal (firm, grayish- whitish). Now he has runny, bloody droppings, and last night when i fed him a red wiggler, he bite it in pieces a couple of times, and then would not finish it, and i watched him open and close his mouth several times while sticking his tongue out as if something was stuck in his mouth. Please help. Also how can i get him to drink more? ( i am afraid if is not getting enough water.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Carrie,

I'm so sorry about your first MHD.
With your new one, the best advice I have is to get him to a vet to get him on the road to a long and healthy life...
It does sound like you are dealing with a hydration problem along with an internal parasite problem.
You need to get him to a vet to diagnose what parasite he he has and prescribe the proper treatment..
MHD will not drink from standing water which is why you see him drinking some from his tree. Right now, with the loose stools, it is adding to the dehydration so the vet is vital...and you can offer some water from an eye dropper. Once the Vet treats for parasites, you will want to give him some "gut booster" such as benebac, nutribac, or other acidophilus product.  This will help replenish the gut bacteria that is killed off with the medication.  Most all living creatures have gut bacteria which aid in digestion. I've included links to finding a vet and also a site for more care info on the MHD.
With the MHD, they are swimmers...and they need to have a pan of filtered and aerated water in their cages.  They will spend a lot of time swimming and soaking, and also drinking as that a MHD will not drink from standing water.
Below is a link to a fantastic site with tons of info on the MHD...be sure to read all the info there, including the links it lists.   You will find that you need to provide a  cage for him that has height...they are for the most part tree dwellers and when they aren't given that in captivity, they can become very stressed.
On the humidity, you may have to add a humidifier to his tank/cage to keep the humidity level at its needed 70-75%.  If you need some tricks for setting up a humidifier, give a shout.  Also, please be sure to read the information on the uvb lights..  and do provide him with uvb...even in the shade of trees, they receive filtered uvb, a very important factor in using the calcium in the foods they eat.  If you need more information on proper uvb, let me know.
Key points of the species:
require humid environment
require moving water as they will not drink from standing water
are avid swimmers
require height in a cage as they are climbers and live in trees.
Require UVB
