how to handle a garter snake

Question
please advise on the best way to approach, then how to actually handle (pick up) a 2 foot garter snake (my son's pet).

any other useful info for caring for this pet (he found it in the back yard & its now in a 10 gal aquarium - fixed up with all the essentials from the pet shop.

my son is afraid to hold the snake, & i think if i can show him by example (if i get up enough nerve) it will help.  right now we are using tongs to move him when cleaning out his home.
thanks very much for your help!

Answer
Hi Margaret,

garters are completely harmless and make good first snakes, you can make him comfy with peat moss and a bowl of water big enough for him/her to coil up in, fo r food you  can put small gold fish in the water and also crickets, when picking him/her up dont hesitate just reach in and pick him up about mid body, and once you have him/her out you can let your garter run threw your hands and go hand over hand he may try to wriggle out or act spastic for a moment but will settle down the more you handle him/her.

well keep me posted and good luck with your first handling it will be no sweat

                     thanks
