Question
Hi Tracie...it wold not let me reply to previous email and said I had to ask a new question...looking at all your replies, I am not the only reptile owner in a quandry over their pet!Last night Beardie had a liquidy/stringy white pee but NO poop/feces....should I worry? I will try to upload pics...the thermometer has not obvious probe, but it is digital, do you think her gaping is a breathing concern more than hot in the basking area? I have the GE Reveal bulbs overhead...100 watts, 3 of them on the hot/basking side , I will try to get a pic later...the tank is glass and my house is cool(NY), and the top is a screen, it seems that I have a challenge to keep the basking side 100-110, often 90's..I will try to feed her again,I was wondering if I am over hydrating her? I know this has to go through this forum, and I can not get onto BD.ORG, even though I have ab account. It is my computer, the cookies, etc, if it is easier, I know this is an awesome and learning forum, you can email me directly at  or I am open to talking on the phone. I ask the vet if he can help on the x ray costs, I want to help her and am getting sadder by the day, but so far she is here, her eyes, she is keeping one closed often, the other ok, not sure if they are sunken. If you have any friends in the Albany NY area who would look her over I would be greatful! Thanks...Stacey

Answer
Hello Stacey,

Ok, so you are using 3, 100 watt basking bulbs????
The entire basking side doesn't need to be too hot.  Just a small basking area needs to be 95-110.  The overall ambient temperature of the tank should not exceed 85 or you risk the chance of overheating.  I would say that 300 watts is way way too much.  Glass is very good at holding heat, too.
The digital thermometer I feel is not measuring the basking temperatures properly.  I myself don't use those types, but I use the type with a probe.  The problems with the digital thermometers that do not have a probe is that they are not built to measure high basking temperatures.  They are good at registering the humidity & just the overall air or ambient temperatures, but when it comes to a particular basking "spot" that you are trying to measure a probe works best.
My home email is:

I need pictures, if possible so I can take a look at her.  Pictures of your tank, too would be helpful.

Did you try clearing out the cookies?  Let me know & I can try to reset your password.  If you email me, just send me your username on BDorg, & I will see what I can do.
