Question

crested gecko tub
i just got my crested gecko today in the mail, he seems very healthy and hydrated. what i didnt know was how big he was going to be. now that i see how big he is, only 2in at the max, i am wondering if he is still to small to go into the enclosure i have for him. i have an 18inx18inx24in exo terra cage. i put him in it and thought that he was to small for it so i got a plastic tub out, poked holes in it, put a fake plant, hide, water dish and crested gecko diet dish in it. i dont want to put him in that huge cage and freak him out. he is now in a 12 Qt. tub. is this the right thing to do? i read that the babes dont do well in large enclosures, just want to make sure that i am doing want is best for him and not put him into shock going into such a large cage wen he is so small.
thanks for your help,
Luke

Answer
Hi Luke,

I'm glad your crestie survived the shipping in such good shape. I think that keeping him in the smaller enclosure for awhile is advisable. That is what I used to do with my hatchlings as well. I think the benefits out-weigh any further re-location stress that he may experience when you move him to the Exo-terra.
The set-up looks good and you will be able to control the humidity better which is important for young geckos that are shedding frequently. You will still need adequate ventilation however so drilling several holes is recommended.  You will also be able to monitor his feeding and droppings more closely. I always gave mine a mixture of insects and fruit based food (this was before complete commercial diets were available for cresteds) and the small enclosures made hunting a bit easier for the babies.
Cresteds don't require a lot of heat and small enclosed cages can overheat quickly which is another important thing to keep in mind and monitor closely.

Enjoy your new baby. He sounds like he is in good hands.
