Bearded Dragons sudden death

Question
My son's bearded dragon died suddenly yesterday.  She
appeared to be perfectly healthy in the morning.  My wife
did let her eat some asparagus by just biting from the stalk
while she held it.  She ate almost the entire stalk and I
suspect it may have killed her due to indigestion induced
paralysis.

Several hours after eating the asparagus she was stumbling
around the cage and extremely dark grey in color. She would
also flop around with what appeared to be spasms.  We placed
her in warm water and she started pooping and her color
returned to normal and we thought she was okay.  However, an
hour later the symptoms returned and this time she appeared
to be gasping while in the water (her mouth and nose were
never under water)she expired shortly after.  My son is
quite devastated by the loss and I want to make sure we
don't repeat any possible mistakes in the future.  I
appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Answer
Hello Alan,

I am very sorry to hear about your dragon's sudden death in that manner.  That was very fast indeed.
Was the asparagus stalk raw?  If so, that is most likely the culprit of death since raw asparagus stalk is very fibrous & it could have lodged in her GI tract pretty easily.
If she was "apparently healthy" prior to ingesting the food, I would assume this was the cause.  The only true way to determine this is to get a necropsy done on her.
I am very sorry for your loss, & hope that your son will be ok.

Sincerely,
Tracie
