Question
Hi there,
I was given my gecko over a year ago, and he was about 12years old when I got him.  I usually go out and buy 2 dozen crickets and put them in his cage and he eats ad-lib without a problem.  But the other day the pet store was out of crickets and only had meal worms, so I bought the same amount and put them into his cage.  I woke up this morning and his stomach seems to be bloated and he seems a bit lethargic.  Is it possible he over consumed, should I take him into a vet? Please let me know thank you

Lisa

Answer
Hello Lisa,

How many mealies did he eat?  They are a bit harder to digest than the crickets.  Has he gone to the bathroom yet?
You can try to get some canned pumpkin or sugar free applesauce along with a drop or so of olive or mineral oil into him with a plastic syringe or plastic dropper.  That can help things move along a little bit better.  Is he drinking water right now?

I would definitely lay off of the mealies right now, until he fully passes them through.  Then, just limit him in number.  So he eats 24 crickets in one sitting, do you leave them in the tank with him?

For an adult, he can eat every day, but they normally don't need more than 5-8 feeders daily to maintain their adult weight after they are full grown.  Many adults only eat every other day in fact.

Let me know how he is doing.
