baby bearded dragon with a tail injury

Question

The two babies before
Sometime during the night last night my baby bearded dragons must've
gotten into a bit of a fight and the smaller one now has the tip of his tail
almost off.  I called a vet and he said just to put some anti-bacterial cream on
it, a liquid bandage, and separate the two for a few weeks. I've already
separated them. The vet isn't one I'm used to dealing with, so I just want to
double check his advice.  Is this proper? Also how big should the babies be at
6 weeks?  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Amanda,

Too bad that happened, but it is fairly common for tail nips to occur.  You will need to keep them separate from now on.  Some just do not get along & next time it wont be very good, it could get much worse.
The vet is correct.  Just get some betadine & dilute it down to use as an antiseptic to clean the area.  Then, get some neosporin or polysporin to put on the affected area.  Watch very very closely for infection since it was a bite & they do get infected.  If the area appears to be getting infected & changing color it will travel up the tail so if that begins to happen you will need to take him into the vet.  An infection such as that can make them lose their entire tail & will make them very ill as well.
At 6 weeks old an approximate size should be around 6-8 inches in length.  It greatly varies among dragon to dragon depending on genetics.
