Question
Hello Tracie

I wonder if you can help me, we have a curly tailed lizard who is about 9 months old.
We have had him for about six months.

He has become very very lethargic, he has not eaten for about 3 weeks soon after cutting his mouth on something in the tank or from his claws.
He started going quiet about 2 weeks ago and steadily got worse with each week.
he has water (changed every day) and various foods wax worms, meal worms and locust (changed each day when not eaten)
the bulb is a UVA75. this is set from 7;00am till 10;00pm
The temp in tank is 50-55 degrees celcius (high end) and 30-35degrees celcius (low end)

I am concerned that the lizard is in poor health but i dont know what to do to help him.
Can you give me any advise.
ive taken some pictures of him but when i put him back in his tank he flopped on his back and did not move to correct himself, i had to put him back on his belly..he looks very sad, please help

Kind Regards

Paul

Answer
Hello Paul,

Oh dear, poor dragon.
Please do post pictures for me if you can.
If you are just using a UVA light, then that will be the trouble.  You will need a UVB light to help his body synthesize & absorb calcium & D3 properly.  He has metabolic bone disease & you must get a UVB light immediately to help try & stop the progression of this problem.
Since you are in the UK, you should be able to find the Arcadia D3 12% tube bulb easily.  I highly recommend the T8 or the T5 High Output bulb which is a higher intensity tube bulb.
Are you using calcium supplementation for him?
Also, please send pictures of his tank setup too for me.
Since he is not eating, you can get some chicken or turkey baby food & mix it with squash or sweet potato baby food to syringe feed to him.  You can use either a plastic dropper or syringe to drop food onto his nose so he will lick it off.  Also, I really recommend using a liquid calcium also to help expedite the calcium absorption.

Let me know how he is doing.
