Our Gecko is suffering a skin complaint

Question
We have 2 leopard gecko's.  Last night we found that 1 of them has what looks like an infection, which has broken a lot of the skin on the geckos tail, the surface looks very raw.

We have researched the net, & have compared how our geckos have been maintained.  In recent weeks the water bowl got spill slightly on the sand, & our daughter has been placing too many mealworms in their tank.  Both of which can lead to infections.

We think that we have pinpointed the problem, we intend to seperate the poor gecko, place in a tank with paper as substrate, & restrict the time the mealworms are left in with the geckos.

Can you please advise of any ointment, spray cream etc, that would ease the actual skin complaint.

Answer
Hello Kelly,

What sex are your two geckos?  Is it possible that you have 2 males & one is dominating the other?
You can leave mealworms in the tank, as long as they are in a dish to where they cannot climb out of.
Well, are you in the US or the UK?  A good ointment is just the basic neosporin or polysporin, they work well on wounds, etc to help keep infection away.  There is also a cream called thermazene which is just silver sulfadine but it is excellent in helping healing.
Can you post a picture of the wound?
I would keep the paper substrate even after the wound is healed.  They are notorious for licking loose substrate & getting impacted.
