Calotes
QUESTION: Hi,

I received this weekend 2 calotes jubatus (a male and female) I searched on the internet for discussions on the calotes but I didn't find anything. I'm wondering if you could told me more about these lezards?
Are they same species as the green crested lizard or the bronchocela jubata. I'm a little bit confused.
I want to care of them as good as possible.

Thanks in advance

ANSWER: Hello Deborah,

That little lizard looks tropical.  I have never dealt with one before.
I would keep him at a basking temperature of around 95 but no higher than 100.  The humidity should probably be around 40-50% to help with shedding.
They do resemble the crested lizards, too.
I will do some more research on them.
They will be carnivores most likely, so try feeding crickets, & worms, appropriately sized of course.
I recommend using a UVB light as well.  Here in the US, the Reptisun 10 tube bulb is the best UVB tube you can get.  Use that in combination with a basking bulb such as a regular house hold light bulb.

He is very pretty.  Do you have an approximate age?

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,

Thanks for your respons.

I don't know their ages.

Ok I think we are on the good way. The temperature is around 85 to 95. The humidity is around 40% for the moment. Maybe I can put more plants in the basking for them to keep the humidity good.
We have a reptisun 10.0 UVA- UVB with a basking bulb of 40W.

We fed them with crickets but they didn't eat. They are a little bit stressed (due to the trip :-))

What do you recommend as basking size? I think their body mesure +/- 15cm without the tale.

Thanks in advance for the research.

Deborah

ANSWER: Hello Deborah,

Great, that sounds good!  How are they doing?  I am sure that they were stressed from the trip.
The plants would be a great addition for them, so they can have things to climb on.
Good, the Reptisun 10, is that a tube, correct?
I hope that they start eating soon then, & they should as soon as their stress levels decrease.
The basking branches should be longer than they are & wide enough for them to not fall off.
They may grow a little bit more, if they are not quite adults.
Don't forget to supplement them with the calcium powder several times per week for them.

Let me know how they are doing.

QUESTION: Hi Tracie,

They are doing well...I suppose :-) They looked less stressed then 3 days ago.

The reptisun is a compact lamp.

I think they ate some crickets, we saw only 2 of the 10.

Do we have to give some vitamines too and how many times a week?

Could you tell me what minimal size is require for their habitat?

Thanks in advance

Deborah

Answer
Hello Deborah,

Maybe you could get a Reptisun 10 tube bulb instead.  The compact/coil lights are not very strong & can put out low wavelength of UVB as well.
The vitamins can be given 1 time per week but calcium should be 3 times or so per week.
I would have at least a 40 gallon tank, for comfort for them both.
Wow they did eat a little bit, that is great!  It sounds like they are starting to do a little bit better now.  I am happy for you.  They are so pretty.

Let me know if you need anything.
