Brumation?

Question
Hi. My BD got a cut on his foot and it got infected. I took him to the vet and they cut open his foot and drained it out. They gave me shots of Baytrill and Silvadine cream to give him. He started sleeping all the time and won't eat. I talked to the vet and he said to take him off the meds because it could be an allergic reaction. So I did. But he's still not active. Is it possible that he's just brumating?

Answer
Hello Kourtney,

If you live in the US, then it is not brumation.
Most likely, one reason that he is lethargic & inactive is that anytime they are given antibiotics such as baytril, they are hard on their system.
I recommend getting a probiotic such as acidophiliz, benebac or nutribac to help replace the normal flora of bacteria in his tummy.  It most likely is not an allergic reaction but just him, not feeling well, in general, due to the medication.
Do you know how much your dragon weighs?  How much meds, dosage wise, was given, & for how long?
Get some bee pollen, & use just a pinch of it & mix some of that in with some chicken or turkey babyfood with some squash babyfood.  Use a needless syringe to feed him.  He is going to need some food so right now, you are going to have to assist feed for awhile until he is feeling better.
How is the foot looking?  The silvadene is very good stuff & should help greatly.
You can get the acidophiliz from:  www.reptilesupply.com
You can get the benebac from most petstores in the cat or bird section.  It usually comes in gel or powder form.
The nutribac can be found here:  www.reptileuv.com
