Spikes Poop
Spikes Poop
QUESTION: Well, I have a question about poop. Attached is a few pictures of the waste of my bearded dragon, Spike, and I have a question or two about it. I place him into a new tank back in early September, and he is doing fine with all the right setup gear, or so I hope, with a sand substrate. He hasn't become impacted or anything, but today my mother walked in to find his poop in the sand and said it didn't look healthy, so I came here. I have read that its just because of his vegetable diet, he does eat a lot of peas, but before we crossed him onto the sand he had the regular, tube-shaped poops... Since then, they've been these mound-shaped things... He also won't poop if he hasn't eaten any peas recently... I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Can you please help me with any information or thoughts on this? He is still very active and eats right, but could this be a sign of a parasite, or does he just eat too much watery stuff?

ANSWER: Hello Eli,

Please take him off of the sand.  That is sand passing through him right now & it could impact him.  Are you using calcium based sand?
Use non adhesive shelf liner, carpet, or tiles for his substrate.
Do you him in his tank or outside of the tank?
How often do you give calcium supplementation?
What type of feeders do you fee him?  Crickets, roaches or worms?

QUESTION: No, its not calcium based. I do feed him in the tank, but he doesn't eat the sand. I give him calcium every other day or so, on about 10-15 crickets... I haven't feed him anything else but crickets and assorted veggies.

Answer
Hello Eli,

How old is Spike now?
What type of sand is it then?
It is still questionable regarding the sand though.  What container do you feed him in so he doesn't ingest the sand?
The stool could be off due to him not eating many insects. What other vegetables does he eat?
Is he active & basking or lethargic?
What UVB are you using?
