bahamian anoles

Question
We got a M and F Bahamian Anoles. After about 4 months or so we discovered 2 babies. We were torn whether to take the babies out but the longer we waited the bigger and stronger the babies got. On several occaisions we saw the mom hanging around the babies seemingly protecting them. We did see the mom chase other anoles away. (we have 4 green Anoles too). We never saw any of the other anoles attacking the babies.
After about a month of watching them grow they both were gone within 2 weeks. We think it may have either been a rather large spider we hadn't noticed, or a small hole in the cage where they got out..
Should we segregate new babies? We were surprized that the adults left them alone.

Answer
Hello Kristi, and I do hope that you are not housing green anoles with Bahamian Anoles although they are very similiar they do need a lot of space. How big of an enclosure do you have for these 6 little guys? I do have to say it was most likely another anole that got the babies. I would separate the brown anoles from the green and take any future eggs out incubate them and hatch them and raise them in a different tank until they are almost as big as the parents. They will eat their young and it is common in the wild. The female will lay the eggs and ditch them the male will mate first and ditch the female. So the eggs should be all alone. Then when the mother has nowhere else to go she will eat them. Sometimes you get a rare occasion of the eggs and young surviving with their mother but its best to have them separated. I hope this helped and let me know if you have any more questions or if you need clarification. Good luck!
