Question
What is the best home treatment while waiting for the vet appt. for an iguana that is lethargic, has a swollen tongue, has rapid weight loss in the past 24 hours? No changes in diet, dwelling, temps, etc.
We are bathing, massaging, keeping warm, offering water and jelly water (glucose).

Answer
Hello Karen,

Do you know what brought this behavior on?  Is she possibly egg bound?
Do you use a UVB light?  If so, what type & brand?  A flourescent tube bulb or a compact/coil light?
Are you supplementing calcium 4 days per week?  What foods do you feed her?
It sounds like to me she is severely dehydrated.  What are the temps in the tank?  It is summertime so she could have gotten overheated perhaps?
The swollen tongue is an indicator of dehydration, or metabolic bone disease.
I would make her a greens & veggies slurry to try & get some food into her right now instead of just glucose.  She needs some substance too.  You can use a plastic syringe to get food into her, carefully but you will need some help with that.
Can you post a picture of her?  Is her entire body pale or splotchy?
Let me know how she is doing.
