Question
QUESTION: my bearded dragon has very long nails and she gets caught on everything! Can you take me through a good way to give her a good clip by myself? Sydney is about 7 years old. someone gave her to me so I do not think this is her first trim. Thanks!

ANSWER:  If you are not used to it it should be a two person job. I personally use a pet nail sander made by Dremel, but many people use people nail clippers.  You don't want to cut the quick so only clip the very tip, the vein will start receding slowly if you just do a tiny bit every week till the nails are a managable length.
There is a new pet clipper out which locates the vein and has a series of lights that will show you where it's safe to cut, you may want to get that.

QUESTION: Is it true if you wet the nails a little bit it makes the nail translucent and you can see the vein better? Do you have any more helpful tips?

Answer
I had heard that and even attempted to see if it worked, however I didn't see much difference, If you look at a beardie nail, you will see that the tip is almost needlelike and then a sudden thickness. The vein should only be just past that when a beardie's nails are properly maintained, but in long nails the vein grows way past that which is why a little at a time is the way to go.
One other thing you can try, thin granite tiles as a substrate.  A dragon walking on such a substrate will help wear down his nails gradually.
