Question
QUESTION: i have got a 3 yr old male dragon....and i have also a 10month old bearded female too.(sure it is female??)i put them in together and after 3 weeks of sharing a tank..the female has attacked the male...took a chunk out of the tail...and also i caught it biting the side of the head where the neckline is!?
can anyone let me know if this is a normal procedure??
or give me some idea as to why it happened??

i got 2 so i could breed...i am unsure how to sex them...but i looked at the pics on internet and i am sure i have one of each sex.
thanks
steve

ANSWER: Hello Steve,

First off, you are going to have to separate them.  It almost sounds like to me that you have 2 males.  Females can & will attack but but normally the males are more aggressive.
Also, it is not a good idea to put a 3 year old in with a 10 month old there is too much size difference.
You are going to end up with a dead dragon.
The female I believe it probably a male though.
I highly recommend getting another tank for the female, if that is the correct sex.
Right now, you are going to have to watch for infection on the tail, & infection at the other bite site.  Keep it clean with diluted betadine & then use some neosporin or polysporin on it to keep infection away.  You will most likely end up having to take him in to the vet.
At 10 months it is way too young to breed.  Also, did you quarantine the 10 month old before putting them in together?  It is advised to quarantine the new dragon for at least 3 months prior to introducing one to another one in order to prevent the spread of disease.
Dominance is a huge problem with males & attacking each other is very normal behavior between 2 males.

QUESTION: hi tracie,
yes..i did separate them.but i was told by a pet shop that the 10 mth old dragon was male!!..not female...(should have been the other way round...sorry.) and that the age difference to breed from a male wudnt make a difference in age.the sizes are not alot of difference beleive it or not....about 3" smaller the new one (male).
the tail has skin missing..plus it is going black..so hopefully...this will drop off soon...was told the same as well!?
is this ok so far??

Answer
Hello Steve,

So you do indeed have 2 males?
Males should not breed until they are around 18 months or closer to 24 months or 2 years.  Females should not be bred until they are 2 years old.
I am glad that you separated them now.
I would watch the tail carefully for infection.  If the darkness of the tail spreads then it is infected.  You will need to be very careful of the dark portion as it could possibly travel & turn into tail rot which he could lose most if not all of his tail.  Bites are very nasty sometimes.
