Question
Hello
I'm going to be on dragon sitting duties starting next week for 3 weeks while my buddy goes to Italy. I sat her brother when he was really sick but he later died of sever constipation. I lizard sat her when she was sick but it wasn't bad and she's fine now except for 1 thing, Her tongue has been swollen for weeks and she's always sticking it out. She is eating and active so I'm not to concerned at this point. I'm just looking for some pointers on getting it back down to normal. Maybe she chomped down on it and it got infected or something.
Any insight would be helpful,
                            Thanks

Answer
Hi Army, Tongue problems are not very common with beardeds. I've only ever encountered tongue problems with chameleons.  I'm a bit surprised that she is still eating. I would have thought that the swelling and the likely pain of a swollen tongue would prevent her from eating. Bearded dragons will naturally open their mouths while they are basking to regulate their temperature and their tongue does slightly protrude when they are doing this. I'm wondering if it is possible that this is actually what you have been seeing?
If it is abnormally swollen then it seems possible that she may have bitten it or otherwise injured it while eating. I would have a qualified herp vet take a look in case it does require antibiotics and to rule out anything more serious like a tumour or other growth under or around the tongue.
