Question
my puppy attacked my sulcata while i wasn't home. he has a few scrapes on his shell and i was wondering if you had a suggestion on what to use to clean them as far as a topical antibiotic etc. i found a product on zoo med for reptile wound healing aid and it contains tea tree oil but i have herd that it can be toxic so i don't know how much i should trust it. any help you can give me would be wonderful. thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Alisha,

My two favourites, and also the ones often used by vets, are chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine. Both have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and are used in pre-surgery skin prep.
The povidone-iodine is sold under the name Betadine (probably others as well) and comes as a solution and an ointment. I have also seen it as a "wash" with soap added which I would avoid in your situation.
The chlorhexidine is also likely available under a number of brand names. Hibitane is one that is available here in Canada. You can also just ask your local pharmacist which products available in your state contain these active ingredients.
