My Chinese Water dragon is having shedding problems.

Question
I recently adopted a Chinese water dragon from the pet store I work at. He had gotten Reptile Bark bedding in his eyes and was not eating for a while and was barely moving. He went to the vet, and had his eyes flushed and became more active. It was then I realized that he doesn't use one of his front legs. I don't know if it was broken or its a shedding problem. He hasn't shed as long as I've been in contact with him (about two months) And I recently discovered that on his back (Around one of the spikes) there is a section of skin that has come off and it looks black underneath. There is also a similar spot on one of his knees. I give him warm baths every day and mist him frequently. His humidity's and temperatures are always correct. Do you have any idea what this could be? Unfortunately I cannot really afford a vet bill at the moment :(

Answer
Hi Brittany,
It sounds like he either has some thermal burns..(make sure he isn't too close to his lights and that you are not using a heat rock) or he can have a bacterial or fungus infection.  Many times, if it is a bacterial infection, applying Neosporin ointment will help. Fungus infections are a bit more tricky in that some fungus will respond to something like Tinactin,or even a medication for a yeast infection, but other fungus will get worse when using it.  You can try both medications above and see if one helps..of course if it gets worse, you will need to get to a vet.
