Bloating and Tail
Bloating and Tail
QUESTION: Hi Tracie,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I just got my first leopard gecko a month ago. Before I tell you the problem I'll tell you everything about his vivarium. It's 20 gallons, I have a UTH, and also a lamp. The warm side is about 90, I measure this with a digital thermometer. The cool side is in the 70s. I keep him/her (not sure which) on reptile carpet. There are 3 hides. 1 moist. I have a calcium dish containing calcium without d3. I also have a water dish. To my knowledge I think that I have it set up pretty well in there. I have had a lot of problems though recently with the little guy. He/she has never had a really big appetite and went through a stage where it wouldnt eat at all. Now it has begun to eat again but is regurgitating every cricket it eats. I dusted them with vitamins and it regurgitated them, so i stopped that and it still regurgitated them. It isn't eating too many, because it will only eat 1 and then regurgitate it. Its stomach is bloated and the tail has become extremely thin. I have attached a recent photo of the gecko. I believe I can only attach 1 at a time though. I have more photos if more are needed though. I have tried soaking it in warm water but this doesn't seem to have any effect. Do you believe that it's a parasite or something contracted from being around all the other lizards in the pet store? Thanks again for your help.

ANSWER: Hello Sean,

Your setup looks great actually so I don't think it is a problem with your tank setup.
I would definitely get a fecal done on him to see if he has parasites or worms.
I would also get some chicken or turkey baby food to try & get some food into him with a plastic dropper or syringe.
Is he eating any calcium at all?  You can add that to the baby food too.
He could also have giardia or amoebas, but a fecal needs to be run to see what comes up.

Let me know how he is doing.

QUESTION: I have seen him licking from the calcium dish in the vivarium so he's getting calcium. And I have some with d3 I have dusted the crickets with.  But he doesn't eat them. I got him to eat a cricket last night and he hasn't puked it up yet but still he should be eating more. I'll try the baby food and look into a vet but honestly im just a poor college kid so I don't know if I could afford a vet visit. I know that's not good but it's true. Thank you for your help I'll let you know what happens!

ANSWER: Hello Shawn,

Do you change his drinking water daily?  You could look into deworming him with Panacur that could help if he has worms, etc.
Did he hold down the cricket so far?  Try the baby food first, to see how he is doing & if he can hold that down also.
Let me know how that goes.

QUESTION: He did hold down the cricket and actually passed some watery stool. And yes I change the water daily and I just use distilled stuff. I have heard of Pancur reading around online about parasites do you know the correct dosage to use? And can I just get it at any drug store?

Answer
Hello Sean,

Sorry about misspelling your name!
That is great he held down the cricket.  Are they small enough for him?
I would still try some baby food just to get some more nutrition into him.
Good, the distilled water should be fine then.
You can try looking in a local feed store to find Panacur, but I doubt the local petstore would have it.
I know the proper dose but would need the weight or approximate weight of your gecko.
How is he doing today?
