Question
QUESTION: I have an Olde English Bulldogge that should be going into her 2nd heat this April. She turned 1 in February. All the breeders I have talked to say it's ok to breed on the 2nd heat, but I have also read that I should wait until she is at least 2 years old. Is 14 months too young to be a good mother to her pups? And would it be doing any harm to her body?

ANSWER: Hi Stevi

Hello fellow OEB breeder!

It really depends on the female. How mature she is, her health, who you plan on breeding her to.

It's important to make sure she's in top physical and mental health. That she conforms to standard and is without undesirable inherent breed traits.

Young females can reject and/or harm their pups, regardless of the breed.

Good luck

QUESTION: Thank you for responding so quickly  :) Do you breed your OEB's on their 2nd heat? Bella is a very good dog, so I'm not really sure how to tell how "mature" mature is. She is a laid back dog...until the doorbell rings - then she gets wound up. She has gotten better about jumping on and kissing visitors though... (maturing?) Physically she is awesome; mentally she is very smart, and obeys well. Based on that and the fact that you yourself breed OEB's, do you think she would be ready? Thanks

Answer
You can send me pictures (front, side, back) that way I can determine pasterns, hocks, bite, skin etc. etc. But keep in mind, just looking at a photo in no way can tell me about the dog, other than the usual.

We take each female on a individual basis, one female may be ready and one may not. It's impossible to make a blanket statement to cover every animal.
