dont know if she has enough milk

Question
I don't know if she is making enough milk. I tried squeezing and a little milk came out but not allot. Is this normal? Is there anything I can give her like vanilla ice cream to help with her milk supply? Also her puppies are just a little over a week old and yesterday we noticed one of the puppies side of the face and under the neck has like a hard knot there. What could this be? The baby don't seem to be in pain and she appears to be eating ok. It was really big on the side of her jaw and it seems smaller today however now its a little bit larger under her neck. I was thinking maybe from the way her mom is picking her up. Also my son dropped one of the puppies. :( I don't know if it was her or her sister. Any suggestions? Everyone says just wait a few days to see how she is doing seeings how there is no sign of her hurting and shes eating. Help me please! Thank you....

Answer
Hi Kim

You never mentioned what breed the pups are or how many pups she had.

How do the pups look?  Do they look like they are getting fed? If they are thin looking and "whinny" that a sign that they are not getting enough milk.  You can feed her pups on a rotation basis.  45 minutes with the momma, 45 minutes in a secure, warming box.

The only suggest is to supervise children when they are with the pups.  Broken bones are a major concern.  Also if the female is picking up the pup...why is she doing it?  To bring the pup closer to her for protection or to push it away?
