Seizures

Question
My 16-month old Siberian had a seizure (his first)a few days ago. The seizure was just a minute or two, he recovered very quickly and he had no more. Beautiful, clear day. The breeder told me there had been one incident (5 years ago) with a relative of the mother. Nothing else has ever been reported to her. Nothing unusual in terms of food or environment etc. He eats Innova and Merrick puppy foods, mixed. I've done a fair amount of research since then and of course talked to my vet. It seems it's a wait and see type situation. Can you offer me any advice whatsoever?

Answer
Unforrtunately (or maybe fortunately), there sometimes is apparently no reason or cause to these intermittent seizures.  You've done the right two things - contacted the breeder for a history, and a vet for advice.  One event five years ago with a relative is not a pattern - which is good news.  Your dog being 16 months old and having never had one is also a good sign.  Add to that a short duration and quick recovery - more good signs.  There is a great chance that nothing more will happen with your dog and he will live a full life never having another.

There is also a chance that this was the first of several to come.  If that happens, definitely contact the vet and there is some medication that I've heard can work really well.  However, at this point - I think this is just something to remember and keep track of; one random seizure, with really no family history to speak of, is not alarming.

Sorry that I couldn't provide any great wisdom here, but it sounds like you've educated yourself on this quite well already and have done all the right things.  Feel free to write back if you have any other questions.
