moulting at start of winter

Question
Hi, we have just adopted a 4 y/o rescue husky called Shelley, and she's generally in great health. I've just noticed that she has started moulting in large clumps just in front of each hind leg where I have also noticed her nipping or biting herself (but not very often). Since it's the start of winter here in Australia, I would have thought that it's the wrong time of year to be moulting? We have however had a few quite hot days recently (upto about 28 degrees C). What do you think?
thank, mark

Answer
Mark,
I will not worry about it.  Huskies do shed a lot.  The hot weather also makes huskies shed more.  I had that problem with the winter in Michigan.  It was a mild winter and my husky start shedding in the middle of winter since the weather was so warm.  If she starts balding in the area, than I would ask a Veterinarian about it especially if she is chewing more often and the area becomes red and raw.  However, it sounds normal to me.  Groomer helps reduce shedding, but not by much.  If you have any other questions, please ask.  Enjoy your new husky.
