Question
my 13yr old husky was an outside dog untill recently i started bringing him inside. winters are cold i live in N.Y. sometimes -10below. he behaves perfect all day only needing to go out 2x for bathroom. i walk also him every day. the problem is at night when i go to sleep he barks to go out almost every 1-2hours and acts like he is hot by panting. so i have been keeping him out at night. he barks to come back in around 6am. why is he so fussy and hot at night?

Answer
If he has been an outside dog he is used to the cold temperature outside. At night I keep my home at 55 degrees to make it comfortable for my dogs. They are not outdoor dog though they are indoor dogs. They get to hot in the Winter for bedding in their crates and I have to remove them. It will take him a while to acclimate himself to the temperature inside the house. I wouldn't put him out if you want him to get used to it but keep him in as much as possible and lower the temp in your home to make it a little bit more comfortable for him. I would also take him in and get him professionally groomed to remove any dead hair, skin cells and oils. This will make it more comfortable for him in the house and hopefully will allow some heat loss. His coat is perfect and was bred by a nomadic tribe to stand temps -58 F and lower.

If you can give him a place to sleep that is on a cool wood floor with no bedding it will help to. But also give him a comfy set up in case he get uncomfortable there.

I understand he is getting older and it is probably in his best interest to bring him in. For right now I would leave a nice warm comfy dog house outside to so he can get shelter if it is to much for him, since he is DEMANDING he outside, he obviously is comfortable with outside and isn't suffering any. You can also keep an eye on him and bring him in if he spends lots of time in the house.

If you keep him in for longer and longer periods he will get used to it but slowly.
