genetic of the Siberian husky

Question
I have been doing research on the genetics of the Siberian husky. There is not a lot of information out there. do you know how the color genetics work? are there any colors that should not breed together? What colors do you breed together to get a certain one.  I know about breeding only the stander, getting hips and eye certified before breeding and not to breed them under 2yr old. It is only the colors genetic I need information on. Thank you

Answer
Black is dominate and red (which is really a yellow gene) is submissive trait as a rule. But you need to look at the pedigree 8 generations back if you can (because mom and dad can be black but if they have 4 gen of almost solid red and white they can have a whole red litter). Then the Dam and the Sire you need to put both 8 generations together and figure out which color appears in what order of occurrences. The one that appears the most you have the most chance of getting. What appears the least, or not at all, you have slim to no chance of getting. It isn't as simple as it seems, generally it is a crap shoot. You will also have to figure out the % of piebald, splash coats and such to figure what types of markings and such are possible.
Also in this breed White is a masking gene, they do not lack pigment it is just that the gene doesn't let the color they are show. In that case, White with black points (black pigment around the eyes and lips) is a black and white. Liver colored points, or pink colored is genetically a red. So when you have white in the ped things get difficult, but you can usually figure it out depending on the occurrences of colored dogs on the pedigree.
You can breed any color with each other with no health consciences. I am leery about breeding piebald (also called pintos by some because of their spots) to piebalds though, just because of the things I have read on the Internet so I stay clear of them. Generally you can't get them from a decent breeder, because they don't show well in the show ring. Whites don't show so well ether, but you have a better chance finding a good breeder that has them they a piebald. Don't ever buy a dog from a breeder that doesn't do the things you mentioned above about breeding Siberians. Good Luck and always come back when  you have more questions!
