How far to walk husky pup

Question
This is our first husky and he is four months old now. We just started walks and I am not sure how far is safe to walk him. I can't find any information on it and am getting differing answers from the people that I ask. Right now we are walking a mile and a half and he still seems to have tons of energy when we are finished. Someone told me that this is too far and someone else too short. I know his bones are still developing and don't want to hurt him. What do I do? How far is too far? When should we start running? Is there a good training book out there specifically for huskies? I had akitas in the past and am using those tactics with him now but would like more. Thank you!!

Answer
Shelby,

Don't worry too much about the Siberian bones.  They are actually well put together and pretty resilient dogs.  While they can be victims of over-training, they don't have the concerns that some larger breed dogs do with exercise and such.  So, walk them as far as they want to go.  If you are finishing and the dog still has energy and wants more, then you were fine - you didn't go too far.  As for running, you can start short runs now (the dog probably runs when playing now anyway!).  Around six months you can start working some distance up, and around a year you can introduce pulling to the mix if you are so inclined.  Again - let the dog tell you what to do.  If the dog is still wanting more, than you didn't push it too far and that's a good thing.  I know Sibes that are running a couple of miles by the age of 1, and casual walks can go A LOT further.  As for training books, I don't know any good ones off hand, but feel free to write back and we can keep discussing it!
