Siberian Husky Defending

Question
We have a 5 Month Old Siberian Husky.  We are having trouble with him defending food and/or toys.  95% of the time he is good and plays with the toys and lets us take the food.  But with certain food and sometimes with any foods he will growl and bark if you get close to him.  We have a baby on the way and I need to find a way to fix this problem before the baby gets here.  I just need to know what to do.  2 of the foods that he will aggressively protect are Pig Ears and Chicken Jerky Dog Treats.

Answer
Hi Chris,

What you are going to have to do is stop giving him the "treats" or food that he is being aggressive over.  He is possessive over these certain food items which is not good at all.  It is a behavior problem and if you want to fix it then I suggest contacting a trainer that is a specialist in animal behavior.  If you don't want to stop giving these certain items to him then he should only get them in a cage or behind close doors away especially away from the little one.  Don't punish him since it might cause him to be more aggressive towards you and will not improve his problem with defending his food.

If you have anymore questions please ask.  Any type of aggressive needs to be treated with a professional.

Congrats on the little one on the way.

Thanks and Good Luck,
Laura
