Question
I have 2 8 year old male huskies that gain weight very easy. They are always outside and our back yard is good size, so they get a fair amount of exercise.
I am now feeding them Beneful Weight Control, one of them has lost some weight, the other one doesn't seem to be making improvements. I feed them 1 & 1/2 cup in the morning with a little bit of wet food and 1 & 1/2 in the evenning dry food only.
Am I over-feeding them? is an appropriate kind of food.
I take any suggestions.
thanks you
Monica

Answer
I would try Canidae Platinum (http://www.canidae.com/dogs/platinum/dry.html), or a weight control formula from foods like Evo (http://www.evopet.com/products/default.asp?panel=in&id=1492), Taste of the wild(http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/). Beniful is not a good food. Here are your first ingredients.

Ground yellow corn, Dog cannot digest this, this is probably why it is diet food
chicken by-product meal, By product is the intestines, stomach and everything else they do not serve in human food and they process this with the poop still in the intestines
corn gluten meal, Again they cannot digest this and is only an ingredient to make the food Chewy (it is a filler) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gluten
soybean hulls*, This is added for fiber, again something that isn't digestible just makes them poop. http://www.wvu.edu/~agexten/forglvst/soybenhu.htm
whole wheat flour, Cannot be digested by a dog. Holds the food together to give it form
rice flour, SAME AS WHEAT (if it was actual rice this would be a good ingredient)
chicken, Finally something that provides nutrition but by this ingredient the amount in the whole bag is equal to what you get on a Mcchiken sandwich. (the ingredients are listed by amount added greatest to least.)
soy flour- Cannot digest, again for form.

I am not going to go any further with the ingredients in this food it is a bad food.

Also get them out on walks more. I know you say the back yard is good sized, but really they see it every day how stimulating could it be.
