Rescued Husky/Shepherd not eating

Question
My sister just adopted a rescued 1 year old Husky/Shepherd mix. He is the sweetest dog, very very docile. Maybe too docile. He is not eating. For the first couple of days she was able to get him to eat cooked eggs but now he has no interest in even that. He drinks plenty of water. He has also taken to peeing on the carpet even though he is let out plenty during the day. He just lays around all day with no interest in playing. Is it possible he is depressed? Help please.

Answer
Darcie,

It is not uncommon for rehomed dogs to go through an adjustment period of several weeks, and food is often the first thing to be pushed away.  As for the urination, my suggestion is crate training and that should help reestablish house training.  Any questions on that, let me know.

As for eating, here's some ideas.  First, if the dog is drinking water, that's good.  A dog can live for quite a while without food, water is a different story.  So if the dog is drinking, don't be too concerned.

Second, Huskies are well known for not eating much, so be aware that "normal" feeding amounts might be too much, and a dog might skip several meals because it ate too much earlier.  (Just like a lot of people don't eat as much around Thanksgiving Dinner, but instead eat a ton at dinner).

My general advice is if the dog doesn't eat for 2-3 days, starting changing things around slightly to encourage food.  Adding things like shredded cheese to the kibble, or low sodium broth (my dogs love chicken broth, but beef or vegetable can work as well) to the kibble.  If the dog is still showing no interest in any food (even small amounts), you may want to try more appetizing things like small pieces of meat or egg.  If after a week you aren't seeing some improvement, you may want to try a trip to the vet to check for stomach issues.  Keep in mind, that a dog that is eating once a day could actually be consuming enough nourishment, so don't be too concerned if after a week the dog eats half a bowl of food and doesn't eat anything else until the next day.  Over time, he should start eating more consistently.

Hope this helps and write back if you have other questions or concerns.
