Question
I have 2 questions i would be grateful for your help with. I have a male 18 week husky/malamute and a 13 week female purebreed husky. We got the female because the male would howl though the night unless my husband or myself slept with him. They get on really well but my male is still restless in the night. He howls to be outside and then when out howls to come back in! Is there a technique to calm him? Also my females ears became erect at 7 weeks but 2 daus ago one flopped over for seemingly no reason. Is this common and will it point back up? she is in no pain and showing no ill effects from it. I look forward to your reply. Thanks. Gem.

Answer
Her ears should stand back up, but sometimes they don't. If her hears aren't up by 5 months you might have to tape, but in some cases when the ears become to big or the cartilage in the ears becomes to weak the ears do not stand up.

Now the Malamute, he has you trained good. You need to start ignoring him more, he howls because he KNOWS you will come and get him. He doesn't need out and he doesn't want potty he wants you by him all the time. You are supposed to be training the puppy not the other way around.
Dogs only repeat behaviors that get them what they want. He is obviously getting what he wants every time since he keeps doing it.
You are going to need to schedule his feeding and watering so he doesn't have any of both 2 hours before bed time, this is so you know he doesn't have to go potty. Maybe set an alarm clock at one point of the night so you do get up to take him out since he is so young. Siberians are stubborn so be prepared to lay their not moving or even saying anything for quite a while while your pup throws a fit. Do not get up and let the puppy out until the alarm sounds so he learns that you decide when he goes out and you decide when you will pick him up.

When you do pick him out to take him outside, DO NOT say anything to him or snuggle him until after he does his business outside, then give him a quick good boy and a pat for doing his business where he should. The quietly put him in his sleeping spot and without looking or talking to him go to bed.

Here is an article that has a few different Ideas.
