Red Eyes

Question
QUESTION: Yes we bought a husky and for awhile now her eyes are red in the white part of the eyeball I was told it could be just allergies. Could the redness be caused by her dog food? She is on purina puppy chow and I was told that was a low grade dog food. We just bought her from petland and i just want to make sure that there is no majior concern

ANSWER:  Yes Purina is a low grade food. But, eye redness come from seasonal allergies not food allergies. In food allergies you will notice hair falling out, dead dull coat and itchy feet (they chew and lick their feet a lot). Seasonal allergies are accompanied by sneezing and runny noise, just like in people.
Seeing that you got your puppy from petland, usually those puppies come from puppymills. They are usually from breeders who want to sell the puppies and only care about the money not that they get a good home. Usually they are not kept in the best conditions.
Saying this I think your puppy has an eye infection and needs to get eye ointment from your vet. If you can't get your dog in quickly you can always use clear neosporin. Not the neosporin with the pain relief in it.

QUESTION: Thank you very much. Then what kind of dog should i get for a husky I was thinking about switching to Canidae All the Life Stages. I was thinking about getting the salmon formula or is there a better one for a husky, but what kind of protein and fatty acid % should I look for in dog food? And I do think it is allergies because she does sneeze more and she does have a runny nose every once in a while, but i will get them checked out, but if it was a eye infection would there be some kind of discharge from her eyes? Yeah We found that after we bought her from petland and we will never buy a puppy from them again. and is there anything we can do about her allergies or is it best just to allow them to run there course?

Answer
Canidae is a really good food. Lamb and rice would be good for a dog with allergies. But I think she might have seasonal allergies not food allergies. On the really bad days give her Benidryl (sp) 1cc per 15 lbs. But if she doesn't seem to miserable just let if run its course because is is worse for them to be on meds all the time. She is also young so her immune system can still correct itself since it isn't done maturing until after she turns 1. So only use the medication if she is getting really bad. (Get the Children's dye-free allergy).
I will be honest and I do not know what % are needed in a dogs diet. I give my dogs a fish oil supplement every day with their food.
But here is a website I found so lets read this one together lol!
