Naughty Husky

Question
I have a 2 year old Husky that I adopted when he was 10 months old.  I trained him loosley, but he knows that I'm the boss.  I have been having problems with him that I just can't seem to fix.  For one, he is a runner.  He could escape from jail, I'm sure.  He got hit by a car 2 months ago, and is fully healed, but STILL RUNS AWAY!  He has a shock collar, and can be off lead when he has it on.  Another problem is that he eats off tables and counters.  He can even open the bread box and devour 3 loafs of bread!  I tried dicipline, but nothing works!  He doesnt do ANYTHING unless he knows there is something in it for him (treats...LOL).  Hes a great dog, and I knew I would run into this problem w/ a husky, but I'm determined to make him obey me.

Thank You SOOOO much!

Answer
I will break the bad news to you. Thousands of years of genetic programming isn't going to change because you want it to. This is the most common question I have answered countless times on here and elsewhere. He is  Husky your going to have to except the fact that they are a runner, I also know of quite a few people who have had there dogs hit, and killed, because they thought they could "break them". Birds fly, cats wander and huskies run. The only way to change this is Clip the bird, cage the cat or break the dogs legs (please do not break the dogs legs this is only an analogy). Except and love him for who he is I don't think the dog will ever wish you to change anything is just being selfish on your part on wanting to change something he can't.
Counter surfing can be curbed by putting a static mat or an upside down floor mat (the ones with the plastic spikes) on the surfaces he jumps on. Put all your food in the fridge or put something icky in the bread box. If you do this enough he will figure it is a waist of his time to even waist his energy.
Give him something else to do is hiding little treats all over the house when you leave. Or leaving him a stuffed Kong or more hiding around the house this will also take up his times. Freeze the peanut butter or anything else that you stuff it with to make it difficult for them to get the stuffing out.

Anymore Qs Please ask.
