Question
QUESTION: My 4 yr old male siberian is about 27" at the shoulders, healthy, frisky, gets a walk every day, and is 105lbs.

The vet has him on a special science diet food for overweight dogs.  He has not lost weight in the last six months on this diet.  In fact it makes him go more to which he sometimes wakes us at 3 am to go out.

He gets 2 cups of dry food in the am and 2 in the PM and seems hungry all the time.  Table scraps and dog treats have been eliminated.

Help!

ANSWER:  Science diet isn't a good food. The worse the food the more fillers in it the more the dog poos. Try Canidae platnum (you will need the glacosimine in it for this waaaay oversized Siberain his hips will start going bad early so a good food is important to him). follow the feeding instrctions on the back to a T. You will need to feed him according the the large dog instructions insead of medium dog becasuse of how oversized he is. I have a large male to and idealy he should be at 65-70 lbs. here is a video to watch to help you out as well.

QUESTION: I have begun the changeover to Canidae.  Now we will see if it works.  Another question I have is: Does the Hills science diet make him get up in the middle of the night to go out?  This week it has been at 3AM or so.

Sould we feed him once or twice a day?

Thanks

Answer
Since this is the first ingredient:
Ground Whole Grain Corn, that means this is the ingredient that makes up a good %50 or more of the recipe. Dogs cannot digest this since they cannot digest this it just passes through there system to make more poop.
The second ingredient is this:
Chicken By-Product Meal
The bi-product of a chicken is the intestines and other unsavory bits they do not use in human food. They do not bother removing the poop from the intestines, so this is a non-direct sort of way creates more waste because they are eating a previously digested material.
Third ingredient:
Soybean Meal:
Dogs cannot digest this either or they digest it very poorly. Soy is also  on the list of stuff a Siberian, who is known to have a sensitive stomach, are to never eat. It gives them soft stool and since it isn't digestible more poop.
Fourth ingredient:
Animal Fat:
This is the only good ingredient in it so far. Nut the fact that they didn't turn it into a meal makes this ingredient fairly useless because it is fresh and mostly water when they start processing it. Because of this fact this ingredient is deceptive and should be lower on the list.

Fifth:
Soybean Oil:
We are back to soy again because it is a cheep ingredient and people think this is a healthy ingredient, but it really isn't as I said before dogs digest this very poorly if at all. If this was a better quality dog food this would be fish oil with is easier digestible and can be broke down by the body better to produce lest fecal matter.
Sixth:
Chicken Liver Flavor:
Notice it says flavor... that means it is an extract (like a compare a vanilla flavor extract in cooking to an actual vanilla extract, the former only tastes like vanilla but doesn't have a drop of real vanilla in it.) that they use and not even real chicken Liver, that is because they settle for putting C grade or lower meat into the dog food. Since it would be more expensive to A or B grade with is human grade food.

Seventh
Flaxseed:
Flaxseed oil is good for a dog but if the seed is unprocessed to draw out the oils in the seed, it has very little benefits. Again more poo.
Eighth:
Iodized Salt:
Dogs should have very little salt but they put more salt in here then a can of cheese whiz... this is also upsetting to the GI tract.

The rest of the ingredients are fair but at this point it is to little to do much good againced the main ingredients of the recipe that they use. But this is the reasons that your dog needs to go to the bathroom so much.

Okay now the how often should you fees your dog question. He isn't a puppy so feeding him one time is sufficient. If you want to feed his 2 times you split the serving on the side of the bag in half. It seems a small amount of food but that is all they really need. He will be hungry for a while also when you switch over because like a person if you eat  large amounts for a long time your stomach stretches. If you feed them small amounts it will take a month or so but the stomach will shrink down to a normal healthy size again.

Hope this helps you out. Any more questions please ask!
