feeding my husky pup

Question
I've recently rescued a 5 month old male Siberian Husky puppy as a playmate for my 2 year old female Husky. They get along great!

However, He seems to have a voracious appetite. My female has always eaten according to the chart - we feed a high quality dog food (Wellness), and has now settled into 2 cups/day.

However, I find I'm feeding my male puppy almost double the amount listed on the chart. To my knowledge, most huskies are efficient eaters, and don't require very many calories. However, I'm not sure if he requires so much food, or if he just likes to eat? He's eating almost close to 6 cups of food a day. He's extremely lean, and came to us a little on the small side, you could see his ribs. He's only beginning to fill in a little. However I have concerns that he may be over-eating. Any suggestions are welcome!

Answer
Not all Siberians eat like Siberians are supposed to. Siberians can survive on a smaller amount of food then any other type of dog (sometimes feeding to the chart is over feeding a Siberian I go according to my dogs body fat index I get them to an ideal weight and monitor the body fat, I increase and decrease feeding according to my dogs weight) because they have a Low-normal thyroid. This little one being a pup, and being under weight, needs more food. 6 cups is a little much I would do 3 to 4 half in the morning and half at night. I would suspect he is lacking some mineral or vitamin. Try seeing if he will eat a piece of banana. Sounds weird I know but this fruit has everything passable in it (it is also high in sugar so only feed him 20% of a banana. Get him Vitamins. (It sounds like you have him on a good diet, but he was lacking something before you got him so you will have to over compensate to put him back into balance. Usually it is a lack of iron (you will notice him trying to eat dirt a lot if this is the case) don't give him human Iron tablets it is to much for him and will bind him up, get dog vitamins (a skin and coat supplement I belive has the highest amount of iron...I could be wrong). One of my boys ate like this until I put him on a raw diet for a while using ground hamburger, with a small side of his food. I think he got something he was lacking because I changed back to his normal diet later and he ate like a normal Siberian. He was lacking glucoseimene.
Can I ask you if this boy drinks and pees a lot??? If he does I would take him in to test for Diabetes, this also causes them to eat a lot to equalize blood sugar. I had a dog die from diabetes complications, many years ago.
