Adopting an older dog

Question
Hello,
We are thinking about adopting a six year old female husky mix from our
local shelter, she is currently heart-worm positive and is awaiting treatment.
We live in a larger apartment and lead very active lifestyles, going to the dog
park, hiking and traveling with our current dog. We can't seem to get an
answer from anyone regarding what her energy level might be like once she
is done with the treatment. As of right now she just likes to sit beside you and
is very lethargic, but how much of that is the infection and how much of that
is her? We just don't want to get a dog and have them in a situation where
they are unhappy in apartment living. Any help is appreciated!

Answer
Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to say unless you know someone who knew the dog before the infection and shelter life.  Generally, dogs will adapt to their owners, especially when healthy.  Additionally, Sibes are generally very active dogs, so that all bodes well for her integrating well.  However, at 6, she may have become used to a more sedentary life and the infection might have sapped even more energy, so the recovery might take a while.  It's all guess work, but I would suggest trying to play with her a little, and if you see a little spark of energy, then you can probably guess that the infection and situation has slowed her down more than she wanted, and she should adapt well.
