i am getting a husky pup and wondered where to start...
I've never had a dog before and wanted to know where to start. what do i feed a husky pup on? do i put it out side or inside? what jabs does it need? could you please send me as much information as possible. thanks for your time. Lauren

Answer
Lauren,

The more research you do, the better things will go.  Siberian Huskies are a tough breed to work with and generally not recommended for first time dog owners.  However, your best bet is to go the library or a book store and start reading up on dog training - everything from house training to basic obedience.  Find dog breed books to help you figure out if Siberians are right for you, or if there are other types of dogs that might fit your lifestyle better.  Finding the right type of dog is important in making an easier transition.

As for inside versus outside, I generally believe that dogs are companion animals and should be integrated into the home life as much as possible.  There are plenty of reasons for keeping a dog outside, but they are social animals, so they need a lot of interaction.  Keep that in mind as you make the decision as to whether the dog should be kept inside or not.  As for feeding, basic kibble is fine for puppies, although your best bet is to talk with the breeder you get the dog from, or, if you decide to do a rescue, with the rescue group.  You will want to at least start off feeding the dog the same thing it had been getting to make any transition to your home easier.

As far as jabs - I think this may be a colloquial term for vaccinations?  If so, talk with your vet who will be able to help establish the series which will partially be based on age of the puppy and the laws in your area.

Hope that helps to get you started.  I spent about 2 years researching the breed before I finally decided on a breeder and got my first pup, so it can be a long process, but the more educated you are, the better it is.
