Husky and Travel

Question
Dear Laura,

I'm going to get my first dog soon and its going to be a Siberian Husky. But I have a few questions before I do. I have a job that needs me to travel alot sometimes. And I plan to get a Husky that is a few months old. There is one family relative that lives nearby so I wouldn't have to worry about my husky being taken care of. But she has a life of her own so I can't ask her all the time. What would you suggest for me to bring with me to make my Husky's plane trips more comfortable? I realize I need to bring and keep my Husky in a travel carrier, but is there any else I need besides food, water and leash?

Answer
Hi Jason,

I am so sorry that is has taken me so long to respond.  I have had a big emergency with my son and have been away from home for sometime. It is hard to travel with pets especially if you are going to be doing it all the time.  Huskies aren't the idea dog you want to own if you they are going to be in tight space for a long period of time.  They need a lot of exercise everyday with a lot of attention.  Many huskies don't do good being in a crate.  The cry, bark, try to escape, etc, but we have to place them in a crate because they just don't behave home alone.  If you are going to be traveling a lot you are going to want to bring, a couple toys, food, water, leash, dishes, a blanket, and proof of vaccinations and rabies.  You might want to if you can get something to calm your husky mood during travel time.  So he doesn't get stressed or cry during traveling.  I have never traveled with my husky on a plane, so I don't know how they handle that type of environment.  I wish you luck with your new husky and traveling with him/her.

If you have anymore questions, please ask.  And again I am so sorry that it has taken me so long to reply.

Thank you and Good Luck,
Laura
