working huskies

Question
I really don't have a question about my huskies - but I would like to tell you about them.  One we found in a pound - people just dumped him.  His name is Jake, pure white, one blue eye and one brown eye.  He is the most lovable dog.  I know huskies are not famous for guarding but NO ONE comes to my door without him growling to let me know someone is there.  Also he stands by my side when someone does come is he does not know. The other huskie is Katie - she is also pure white with bright blue eyes.  We found her in a field where someone dumped her.  These two could pass for brother and sister.  They get along great.  One time I thought they were fighting, but it's just their way of playing.  Scared me! Anyway these dogs are a blessing to us.  My husband runs the dogs and really exercises them.  He puts them both in harnesess and they run with him behind them on his bike.  Boy do they get looks from people.  They go for miles and miles.  Sometimes 10 or fifteen miles in the winter.  I guess I do have one question for you -- How do you exercise them in the summer when it is so hot?  Katie swims in the pool but Jake won't go near water. But with all the shedding, all the picky eating, all the exercise they must have (or boy do they get bored and let us know it) I would not trade them for all the "regular dogs" in the world.  Please e-mail me because I would love to e-mail you some pictures of my husband on his bike running Jake and Katie in their harnesses somewhat like "snow dogs"  Thank you, Shirley

Answer
Hi Shirley,

I am happy to hear about that two huskies who found a loving home with you and your husband.  It is sad how people treat their animals.  Huskies are a lot of work and people need to understand that before they get this breed.  I have seen horrible things done to a species of animals and it makes me sick.  I found my huskies in an animal shelter and she was in poor shape.  She had worms, her hair was dyed and felt like straw, and she was missing a lot of her hair in the front.  I was upset of her previous owners and also the animal shelter who didn't take care of her needs.  They had no idea about the hair that was missing in front and what her true color of her coat.  She is such a great dog and I can't believe anyone would treat her so bad.

As for exercising in the summer.  Taking them on walks or swimming is a great idea.  Just don't over do it on extremely hot days.  Provide lots of water during the summer months and including extremely hot days.

My email address in Lauraliz76@yahoo.com.  You can send me the pictures through there.

Again I am really happy that you took these two huskies in and gave them a loving home.  We need more people like you and your husband.

Thank You,
Laura
