Teething

Question
Hi,

My husky is 5 months old and have started teething a month or so ago.  What worries me, is that 2 days ago, we were playing and all of a sudden her mouth started to bleed.  When i checked i saw that a tooth has fallen out.  I know it is suppose to bleed to some extend but i think it was bleeding too much.  Anyway, i washed her mouth with salt water and forgot about the incident seeing as she seemed fine afterwards.  Yesterday we went walking with her and she tends to bite the leash while walking.  When we got home, she lost another tooth and was bleeding once again.
This morning her mouth was bleeding once more to the extent that the blood dripped on the floor.  It seems like this happens everytime she loses a tooth but i do not feel comfortable seeing as bleeds quite allot.  It stops within minutes but i just want to make sure that it is not something serious.

Answer
Some dogs do seem to bleed more than others while teething, but a little bit of blood is pretty normal, and a little dripping to the floor is nothing to be too concerned with.  Of course, I always recommend a trip to the vet to double check things that might not be noticed with just a simple description.  The mouth is designed to heal very quickly, so if you notice the bleeding stopping in a few minutes, I would not personally worry.

Something you may want to try to help alleviate the pain of teething, and also stop the bleeding, is frozen washcloths.  It was a trick that worked great with my pups.  Take a washcloth and soak it in a broth (we used low sodium chicken broth).  Then, toss in the freezer.  Once it's frozen, allow the dog to chew on it.  By being frozen, it will cool the gums, help numb any pain, and the chicken broth will help keep the dog interested in it.  It's a great little trick and might soak up some of the blood if it does get to dripping out of her mouth.  Of course, I wouldn't recommend using the washcloth again, so make sure it's an old one.
