Question
We just adopted a puppy from a local shelter.  They told us he's husky/lab/terrier.  He's almost 4 months old and as far as I know had no potty training until we brought him home a little over a week ago.

I've been taking him out every couple of hours, after naps, after eating/drinking, etc.  He's been doing great going when I take him out.  But, he never asks to go out.  Am I going about this the right way?  Will he eventually begin to ask to go out?

He's also (not really afraid) very timid around my husband.  He doesn't go to him at all.  Any ideas on this?

Thanks for any input!

Answer
Definitely work with crate training, and young pups often won't ask to go outside yet because they don't know that outside is where he should be going.  If you are concerned that he isn't asking at all, one trick is to install a bell on the door you use to go out.  (Hanging bell, maybe from Christmas decorations).  Every time you go to the door to go outside, ring the bell.  Make sure it is within reach of your dog, and after a while, the dog will eventually ring the bell when he wants to let you know that he needs to go out.

As for the timidness, don't worry about it too much.  Pups from shelters  often have stranger socialization issues that dogs who have had consistent ownership - it will just take time for the majority of cases.
