Question
we will be adopting a 4 yr old female husky from a rescue home in 2 days time, we read about the breed and we are active and mostly at home- we work from home and we have a 10 year old daughter at school, and we are enrolling the dog for obedience class too- my question is if we were to go out to doc/dentist appointment etc.. how long should we leave the dog unattended and should we get her a crate?
e are definitely will walk her 4 times -3 -4 hours a day and we are training her not to pull on her leash.
for a husky her size and age which is better leash or hrnss?
thanks

Answer
It's always tough about older dogs and crates, but I would definitely recommend getting on and trying it.  Sometimes with rescues, there have been some bad imprints about crates that can be difficult and time consuming to get over; other times the dog will worship her crate!  So, give it a shot, make it a really positive place for her to learn to be, and go from there.

As for how long she can be on her own without being in the crate - varies widely based on how good she is.  I recommend no time outside the crate without supervision at the beginning, and then slowly start letting her into other rooms as you trust her, and then while you go out to get the mail, etc.  You slowly build up and just let that trust build.  Now, I leave my dogs outside the crate for 8-10 hours without a problem, but that might take a while.

I definitely recommend leash training and not a harness if you are teaching her not to pull.  If you need advice, take a look at some of my past answers, and if not, feel free to write back and I'll help you on how to loose-leash train her.
