Running Free

Question
We had a beautiful Sibe for 14 years, she was a very well behaved dog.  We recently had to put her down, old age and running...alot, finally caught up to her.
My question is we own a cottage on a lake in the middle of the forest...not a person besides us around for 24 miles...my 14 year old was never tied when we were there.
We just purchased 2 brothers 8 weeks old, also Sibes, they will be going to the cottage with us by around 6 months of age...we were wondering if it will be OK to let them run free...
someone told me not to let them go together, but it was OK for them to go out separate, this makes no sense to me but I was wondering what you think?
Like I said our other dog was NEVER tied when we were up the lake!
Thanks

Answer
Personally I would never let a Siberian run free ever. Just because your old dog was good doesn't mean that these dogs will think the same thing. They are living things not machines that will operate like the last one. I have also been called by people who have had their dogs killed by  bears, coyotes, and wild cats. Not to mention the STD's and other illnesses they can pick up from wild dogs around the area.
I always tell people if you do not have a fenced area keep them on a leash. Keep them inside with you if you cannot be there if you do not have a outdoor Kennel set up.

This is from the Siberian Husky Club of America's web site
"Of all the shortcomings to be found in Siberians, the most dangerous to the pet owner is their tremendous desire to RUN. But the very first dash that a puppy makes across the road could be his last run, anywhere. A Siberian, for his own protection, should be kept confined or under control at all times. If you are one of those people who think it is cruel to kennel a dog, or keep him confined in his own backyard . . . don't buy a Siberian.

We just happen to believe that any dog is better off in a proper kennel than running loose all over the countryside. Yes, a kennel dog is missing a lot in life: the chance to be hit by a car; the fun of being dirty, full of burrs, and loaded with worms; the opportunity of being attacked by other dogs; the joy of being sick on garbage infested with disease; the pleasure of being tormented by mean kids; the thrill of being shot in a farmyard; and finally the great comfort of never knowing where he belongs or how to behave. We don't want to see any Siberian become a TRAMP."

From A Siberian Husky rescue site
"A nomad at heart, the Siberian has no fear of cars nor homing instincts compatible with our modern society, and once loose, he can easily fall prey to injury, disease, and hunger, or become a pest chasing and hunting small animals or digging in neighbors' yards. Siberian owners quickly learn that, for the dog's sake, it must be confined or kept on lead at all times."

I do not think it is a wise Idea to let them run loose just because no people are near, there are more dangers in the world then just people. Also the fact they can wonder off and not remember where "home" is Could you live with yourself if they got lost and never found their way back?

Any more Question's please ask!
